The TV series "Ally McBeal" is a love comedy where the lawyers seriously argue dozens and dozens of stupid lawsuits in Boston. Boston is described as a beautiful city by the use of a lot of impressive street scenes, so I likes Boston. My favorite character is John Cage. The pleasure of watching the second season is how John Cage develops his relationship with Nelle Porter who joins this season.
In addition to a lot of beautiful scenes of Boston, the drama has splendid stories and presents interesting various conversations. I believe this drama should be recommended for learning English. (In Japan, the most important subject for passing the entrance examination of universities is English language, never Japanese language. I have heard that's the case in U.S. also.) If you read this page by using a browser that can read JavaScript, you can appreciate samples of the conversations. When you reload this page, the samples change different ones. I have listened to them and script down by myself.
I believe the best way to improve my English is to write it. So I have written down about Ally McBeal. However, it seems that splendid English sites about this drama already exist. I thought what I can write that native speakers cannot about Ally.
When we watch non-Japanese movies in Japanese language, we have different impressions if the dubbings are done by different dubbers. Only seven percent of the conversation is transmitted through the language. Thirty eight percent of the conversation is transmitted through sound, such as pitch, the difference of volume, or others. The rest of it, fifty five percent, is transmitted through non-vocal information. Dubbing artists have an important role in expressing the contents of the movies. And I sm not sure you watch it in your language or in English, I am really interested in who replace the voices in other languages. I have got information that Ally McBeal is cablecast in Korea, and is subtitled in Korean. They do not use dubbing artists.
